Zadig is a quarterly magazine aimed at revealing how many different perspectives on the most ordinary things coexist peacefully in France. For each issue, the editorial team picks a fairly abstract topic (such as love or revolution) and invites people from various walks of life to address it in their column.
Zadig’s logo and headlines use Signal by Production Type, while the magazine’s body text is set in Lyon Text by Kai Bernau. The magazine is designed by a team of three: art director Natalie Thiriez and designers Aurélie Colliot and Claire Hennebo.
Signal draws its inspiration from the Caractères typeface used for road signage throught France. Designed with urban navigation and interfaces in mind, the typeface is marked by the rigour specific for most sans serifs of the second half of the 20th century.
A collection of two typefaces, text and display, Lyon started as a Kai Bernau’s student project. The typeface takes its inspiration from Robert Granjon’s legacy, but approaches it from a fresh, contemporary perspective, which makes it look neither too fancy, nor too conventional.
