Canela and Graphik in use: Inspiro

A distant cousin of Caslon and a versatile sans serif help promote healthy diet

December 6, 2023

Inspiro is a project focusing on healthy eating practices and vegan culture. The Inspiro team is now getting ready for opening their own restaurant, delivering talks and workshops as well as cooking dinners in the kitchens of the already existing food spots in Moscow and Tokyo.

The project has recently updated their identity, with the Canela and Graphik by Commercial Type chosen for its typography.

Canela is a typeface authored by Miguel Reyes, with its Cyrillic extension designed by Ilya Ruderman. Conceived as a new spin on Caslon, the font soon distanced itself from its historic prototype. It (almost) gave up on serifs and stopped being a serif typeface in the conventional sense — but never became a sans serif font anyway.

Canela collection includes four families in three optical sizes: Canela and Canela Condensed (inspired by the American book covers of the 1960s and the 1970s) for headlines, Canela Deck for medium sizes (20–48 pt), Canela Text for body text (<20 pt).

Graphik is a multifunctional sans serif typeface created by  Christian Schwartz, good for display purposes, small sizes and practical tasks such as navigation and mapmaking. Cyrillic Graphik was designed in 2015 by Ilya Ruderman (CSTM Fonts).
