Fit in use: Darlene

A variable font on a sound processing pedal

10 February 2006

Darlene is an effects pedal that can be connected to a synthesizer, microphone, or guitar. Heather Brown Electronicals, a company that produced Darlene, says on its website that — unlike many other pedals — it doesn’t distort the sound, but is designed to preserve its original dynamics. The device’s typography features Fit by David Jonathan Ross, applied in two widths. The pedal was designed by Graham McClanahan.

Fit consists exclusively of uppercase characters and can fill virtually any space with maximum density, provided one chooses the proper width. The typeface comes in ten widths, ranging from Skyline to Ultra Extended, and is also available as a variable font.
