Portrait in use: The Sun Walks Down

A minimalistic typeface on a minimalistic cover, the one that made it to the Creative View’s list of the best book cover designs of the Year 2023

The Sun Walks Down is a novel by Fiona McFarlane that tells the story of how, in the late 19th century, the community of a small Australian town is searching for a six-year-old boy gone missing all while figuring out their own relationships, the Australian colonial history, and the causes of drought. Portrait by Berton Hasebe is used on the book’s cover. Art director of the Farrar, Straus & Giroux publishing house Na Kim designed the publication.

Portrait is a French Renaissance serif as seen by a daring modern-day minimalist designer, capable of introducing sharp triangular serifs to the proportions of that time. Portrait’s minimalistic solutions are taken to their logical extreme when it comes to its Inline styles, which appear dimensional due to the added inner strokes.
