CSTM Xprmntl 02 in use: Russians in Africa

A book addressing how Soviet artists, philosophers, and poets perceived the African countries, helped by a heavy sans serif face

13 November 2005

Russians in Africa is a book that explores — through art, poetry, and philosophy — how Soviet Russia of the mid-20th century tried to understand the culture of African countries. The book, published in 2023 by ABC Design, was designed by Katya Yumasheva. The typography in the publication is executed using Xprmntl 02 Bold by CSTM Fonts and Geometria by Brownfox.

CSTM Xprmntl 02 Bold is a member of a family that brings together three entirely different typefaces: a regular super-closed sans with exaggerated, rounded terminals, a high-contrast serif with deliberately straightened strokes of diagonal characters, and a bold heavy sans featuring reverse contrast in both its strokes and proportions. All three work great together, but do not get lost when left all by themselves.
