July 2, 2024

Designer Maria Kosheleva studied various forms of resistance in the social life, culture and lifestyle of the Soviet people in the 1950-1980s and brought her research together in a book which became her graduation project.

Proto Grotesk by Production Type is applied to the book’s headlines, New Baskerville by Paratype is in charge of its body text, while CSTM Xprmntl 01 by CSTM Fonts was utilised to set the quotes.

Proto Grotesk is a spin on a German sans serif from the late 19th century, back when a bright visual language was considered a virtue. A typeface of complicated pedigree, Proto Grotesk manifests some features of Egyptian and Modernist type, combining both rounded and edgy shapes, with some of its characters even fitted with slab serifs.

CSTM Xprmntl 01 is a result of an experiment that compiled a number of different styles into a single graphic system. The main character set is enriched through stylistic sets, which allows to bring together in one line a static serif and a geometric sans, childish scribbles and pseudo-Blackletter, old Slavonic graphics and something ultra modern.
