In spring, Nike released a series of custom balls specifically designed for recreational street basketball. One side of the ball features the series name — Playground — set in Druk Text Wide by Bertone Hasebe, while the other displays the brand name, with part of it set in Base&Bloom by Peter Bushuev.
Druk is a collection of extremely narrow, extremely wide, and extremely heavy styles developed by Berton Hasebe for Bloomberg Businessweek. It was intentionally designed without a style of normal width and any weights lighter than semi-bold, yet its text options work great even at the smallest sizes.
Base&Bloom is a kind of response to the lack of display sans type and the abundance of swashed serifs. Its swashes serve as an integral part of the glyph rather than a decorative accessory. Certain glyphs have as many as ten graphic variants, ranging from exquisite calligraphy to bold brutalism.
