Curbe in use: Maps of Time

Unobvious ‘Thaw’ typography and the prototypes of today’s charts

November 5, 2024

Maps of Time is an essay by design researcher Susan Schulten addressing the work of Emma Willard (1787–1870), a feminist who introduced the ‘maps of time’ format that later defined how charts and infographics of today look. The typography in this Readymag longread designed by Pavel Kedish is served by three typefaces authored by female designers: Caslon by Carol Twombly, Mrs Eaves by Zuzana Licko, and Curbe by Olga Pankova.

Curbe is a distinctive display typeface inspired by the Soviet 1960s. Technically having no historical references, it does have this notable vibe — the script is contemporary, active, broken, dynamic. Many glyphs are fitted with alternates.
