Amalta and Kazimir in use: Shelf Life

A typeface based on flat brush calligraphy used in a book about life in the East

January 14, 2025

Shelf Life: Chronicles of a Cairo Bookseller by Nadia Wassef is a memoir of how three women launched and developed a chain of independent bookstores in Egypt at a time when the authorities strictly controlled the country’s entire cultural life. The Russian edition’s cover features Amalta by Vera Evstafieva and Kazimir by CSTM Fonts.

Amalta is based on the author’s calligraphic writing with a flat brush. A distinctive display typeface with powerful black shapes and expressive counterforms, Amalta comes with swashed alternates. Besides our library, the typeface is also available in the McKellier Woodtype workshop as wood type.

Kazimir is a high-contrast Didone that comes in five weights from Light to Black, each equipped with italics. The typeface contains two stylistic sets, Regular and Irregular. The latter offers alternative letterforms full of bizarre details that are difficult to imagine in a modern text face but work great in larger sizes.
