Roslindale Text

Roslindale gets its unique attitude from the reverberation of sharp serifs against bulbous, round shapes. In her interpretation of DJR’s design for the Cyrillic script, Serbia-based type designer Jovana Jocić has taken Roslindale’s interplay of sharps and rounds to the next level.

Roslindale builds on the model of De Vinne, a quirky oldstyle from 1892 named after the famed 19th-century printer. But while De Vinne was at times a bit blotchy and uneven, Roslindale’s tight spacing and slick curves lean more towards the 1970s interpretations of the style.

Jocić stays true to this visual style and adapts it expertly to the Cyrillic script. From the spikes on the bottom of д to the the curled ball terminals of й, she uses every opportunity to coax the tension out of these disparate shapes. This tension is present in upright and Italic styles, with Bulgarian and Serbian alternates.

Like its headline companion, Roslindale Text with its four widths takes its inspiration from De Vinne, however, its italic is mostly improvised. Roslindale Text also includes small caps which are well-suited to the design’s Victorian charm.

David Jonathan Ross

David Jonathan Ross is a type designer from LA, graduate of Hampshire College, founder of the artist residence Open Studio and co-curator of an archive of the cursive signs of Los Angeles.

Since May 2017, Ross has been sending one font a month to the Font of the Month’s subscribers, all while sharing the scripts for improving those on GitHub for free. Many of his popular typefaces — such as Fit, Forma, or Roslindale — first appeared precisely in those letters to the members of the Font of the Month.

Jovana Jocic

Jovana Jocic is a type designer & lettering artist from Belgrade, Serbia. After receiving a MA in Type Design at the University of Arts in Belgrade, she graduated from the Type and Media course. Currently Jovana is working as a freelance type designer focusing on Latin and Cyrillic scripts, and providing consultations on Cyrillic. Born and raised in Eastern Europe, Jovana aspires to raise awareness and public knowledge of non-Latin scripts and their role in contemporary design.
